Review: MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour Oh Lady

MAC released liquid to matte lipsticks called Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolours that hit the shelves last week. I was immediately intrigued by the color "Oh Lady".

Packaging

The packaging looks like a mix of the typical MAC lipstick packaging for the lid and a see through tube like a typical lipgloss, so I personally think it suits the product very well as it has the consistency of a gloss (liquid, duh) but is as opaque as a lipstick (hence the name...). Overall, suitable but nothing to write home about.

Verpackung

Die Verpackung ist simpel gehalten und sieht aus wie eine Kreuzung aus dem typischen MAC Lippenstift - Verpackungsdesign (abgerundeter schwarzer Deckel) und einem durchsichtigen typischen Lipgloss - Fläschchen. In Anbetracht der Natur des Produktes (flüssiger Lippenstift) finde ich das sehr passend, aber nicht sonderlich spannend.

Application

The first time I applied the color with the testing lip brush in the MAC store which led to a very precise application. However, the curved edges of the applicator work just fine and lead to a nice result, no lipliner needed. The applicator does soak up more product than a brush, so a layer with the applicator is automatically thicker than with a brush.

Auftrag

Viele scheinen begeistert zu sein von dem Schwämmchenapplikator in Form eines abgerundeten Karos, da die abgerundeten Kanten einen präzisen Auftrag ermöglichen. Ich hingegegen habe bei meinem ersten Auftragsversuch ein Probe - Lippenpinsel benutzt und kam mit diesem auch sehr gut klar. Da die Schwämmchenapplikatoren mehr Produkt aufsaugen als ein Pinsel, wird mit ihnen die aufgetragene Schicht automatisch dicker.

Color

Despite everyone claiming it was a "nice plum", i don't think it is. I don't know how plums look where you live, but ours are not as pink and more into the lilac/blue tones. Only with several layers (or one really thick layer) it could look like the lighter plums. MAC's own description ("deep wine") again confuses me as to what kind of wine the people drink/know that are allowed to name the products, because the wine I've seen so far is less pink and more of a dark red.  "Oh Lady" is however a very cool darker pink with a strong blue undertone. I haven't seen any lipcolor like it before, especially since all women are wearing dark berry and dried blood colors at the moment. So this is a refreshing novelty. 

It is very pigmented, so for all you bold lip lovers out there: a little goes a long way, even a thin layer (with a brush instead of the applicator) will amaze you!

Farbe

Sowohl die Beschreibung in anderen Reviews als auch die Beschreibung auf der MAC Website verwirrt mich, da die Farbe für mich weder pflaumig ist (dafür ist sie nicht dunkel und lilastichig genug, außer wenn man die Farbe wirklich großzügig aufträgt), aber auch kein dunkles Weinrot (dafür ist sie zu pink und blaustichig). Wie dem auch sei, "Oh Lady" ist ein kälteres Pink mit einem starken Blaustich. Ich habe noch nie ein Lippenprodukt gesehen, das - vor allem aufgetragen - auch nur annähernd so aussieht. Es gibt einen coolen Vampy - Look ohne so stark rot zu sein. Eine ganz besondere Neuheit, vor allem, weil im Moment alle dunkele Rot - oder Beerentöne (bzw komplett das Gegenteil, nämlich Nudetöne) tragen.

Das Produkt ist stark pigmentiert, sodass man für einen deckenden Auftrag auch sehr wenig Farbe benutzen kann (mit einem Pinsel) und trotzdem von der Farbkraft umgehauen wird.

Feeling

As we are talking about a liquid lipstick, the feeling in the beginning is a bit like a gloss, gets a bit tacky while drying matte and then it dries out the lips a bit. Just a tiny bit though, which is a lot better than my previous experiences with liquid to matte products. No tense feeling over time, although you feel a slight dry layer when you rub your lips together.

Tragegefühl

Da es sich um einen Liquid Lipstick handelt, ist beim Auftrag das Ganze erst feucht (ähnlich wie ein Gloss), wird während des Trocknens leicht klebrig und trocknet dann ein bisschen die Lippen aus. Das Austrocknen hält sich aber sehr in Maßen, vor allem im Vergleich mit anderen Liquid to Matte Produkten ist das sehr human. Es entsteht kein Spannungsgefühl, aber reibt man die Lippen zusammen, spürt man schon eine leichte trockene Schicht.

Longevity

People seem to be surprised/disappointed that the Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolours "only" last about 6 hours (without a meal). Now again, not sure what other people are used to, but none of my lip products look like I just applied them after wearing them for about 2 hours and only few last more than 5 hours. This product looked great after 4 hours (including the occasional sip from my water bottle). It was almost entirely gone after dinner, but 1) still left a nice stain and 2) was still visible in the corners/ outer quarters (if that measurement makes sense to you) of the mouth. It is an overall pretty long lasting product. Yes, you could expect more from a 25€ product, but come on, it is a liquid to matte, as soon as it touches liquid / something wet, it breaks down. That's how it is.

Haltbarkeit

Sich darüber zu beschweren bzw enttäuscht zu sein, weil die Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolours "nur" 6 Stunden halten (ohne Mahlzeit zwischendurch) ist meiner Meinung nach ein Luxusproblem. Keines meiner Lippenprodukte sieht nach 2 Stunden immer noch wie frisch aufgetragen aus und halten tun sie maximal 5 Stunden. Dieser Liquid Lipstick sieht nach 4 Stunden (inklusive zwischendurch trinken) immer noch top aus. Eine richtige Mahlzeit übersteht er leider nicht unbeschadet, aber er hinterlässt einen netten Stain und ist vor allem im äußeren Teil der Lippen hin zum Mundwinkel noch gut (und ordentlich) sichtbar. Insgesamt finde ich das eine statthafte Haltbarkeit. Klar, bei 25€ pro Liquid Lipcolour erhofft man sich mehr, aber alle matten Lippenprodukte (vor allem Liquid to Matte) versagen, sobald sie nass / angefeuchtet werden.

All in all, I might be slightly obsessed with the color and it does last a nice while. However, the price of 25€ (!) does hurt a bit (anything over 20€ for a single shade does), so I will stick to only the outstandingly novel colors of that range. People who complained about the lasting power were mainly from the US, so there seem to be great cheaper and good quality alternatives available. In Germany, I didn't find any, so I am happy with the Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolours and give it 4,75 out of 5 points.

Letztendlich kann man sagen, dass das Produkt echt gelungen ist und vor allem die Farbe "Oh Lady" mit ihrer Einzigartigkeit überzeugt. Allerdings sind die Dinger mit 25€ echt teuer und eigentlich oberhalb meiner Schmerzensgrenze. Diejenigen, die sich über die Haltbarkeit beschwerten, waren größtenteils aus den USA, wo es preiswertere und haltbarere Alternativen zu geben scheint. Ich habe in Deutschland bisher noch keine gefunden, sodass ich lieber in den sauren (bzw teuren) Apfel beiße und erfreue mich an den Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolours, die ich mit 4,75 von 5 Punkten bewerte.

Don't believe the hype: EOS Lipbalms // Überbewertet: EOS Lipbalms

I know most people will disagree but seriously, EOS lip balms are so overrated! There, I said it.
Yes, I first was extremely excited about them to a point that I asked a friend to bring me one from her USA trip, because they weren't available where I lived at that time (about 4 years ago) and yes, my obsession was mainly because 1) Michelle Phan used them in lots of make up tutorials at that time (that's how I heard of them the first time) and 2) they were not available where I lived which gave them the unreachable and therefore special image.

Ich weiß, viele Leute werden mir widersprechen, aber ehrlich gesagt werden EOS Lipbalms so überschätzt! Da habt ihr's.
Ja, auch ich war anfangs total begeistert, sodass ich vor ca. 4 Jahren eine Freundin darum bat, mir eines dieser "Eier" aus den USA mitzubringen, weil man sie in Deutschland nicht kaufen konnte. Und ja, meine Begeisterung stammte vor allem 1) aus der Tatsache, dass Michelle Phan sie derzeit in fast allen Make Up Videos benutzte (daher kannte ich sie auch) und 2) sie so unerreichbar und dadurch besonders erschienen.

They obviously also look incredibly cute and unique, like little pastelly easter eggs, they smell nice and there are so many different flavours / scents and let's face it, no one actually cares about how natural or organic lip care was back then (and some still don't care today) but it still sounds good that the EOS lip balms are majoritively natural, conscious, you know...

Natürlich sehen die Lippenpflegeprodukte total süß aus, einzigartige Form, wie kleine Pastell - Ostereier, sie riechen gut und es gibt etliche Sorten und, auch wenn sich vor allem damals niemand/ wenige wirklich drum scherte: sie sind überwiegend natürlich und bio, gutes Gewissen und so...

Considering the relatively high price (between 5 and 6€) you might expect outstanding effects on your lips, but the truth is, they are only slightly above average (and by average I am really taking into account all of the really cheap stuff that you get as promotional gifts as well). They contain good ingredients, namely no petrolatum and instead lots of natural oils which have publicly known moisturizing effects.

Angesichts des relativ hohen Preises (zwischen 5 & 6€) könnte man erstaunliche Resultate erwarten, aber ehrlich gesagt sind sie gerade mal etwas besser als der Durchschnitt (und die Beurteilung des Durchschnitts rechnet diese billigen Werbegeschenk - Lippenpflegestifte mit ein). Die Inhaltsstoffe sind gut, hauptsächlich Öle, deren Pflegewirkung generell bekannt ist, und vor allem, die Stoffe, die eben nicht drin sind, wie Paraffinum Liquidum, machen die Sache rund.

But a great lip care product would make me need the product less and less. Basically, if you have some sort of a problem and you use a product as sort of an antidote or just to reduce the problem, you would need that beforementioned product less and less as your problem would shrink and finally vanish. That's the theory. So in this case, you'd need the lip balm less and less. However, whenever I use the EOS lip balm, I need to re-apply it every few hours to not give my lips even a slight chance to dry out. Ergo, a regular, not much beyond average product. Don't believe the hype!

Aber ein richtig gutes Lippenpflegeprodukt würde bewirken, dass man es immer weniger benötigt. Wenn man ein (Haut - )Problem hat und ein Produkt dagegen benutzt, erwartet man, dass es derart wirkt, dass man es immer weniger braucht, da das Problem immer kleiner wird bis es letztlich ganz verschwindet. In diesem Falle müsste man also die Lippenpflege immer seltener auftragen. Den EOS Lippenbalsam muss man jedoch ständig wieder auftragen, damit die Lippen nicht austrocknen. Folglich, ein lediglich nur leicht überdurchschnittliches Produkt. Und somit überbewertet.
